Father’s Day is a tribute to the men out there who have children, I have been thinking quite a bit about this lately … We tend to forget about the parents who step up when couples are divorced or the biological father isn’t around to be a “father”. My dad was a great dad but he wasn’t around much, he lived with his wife and his new family and I was fortunate enough to have an amazing man who stepped up to the plate and put up with my teenage angst. He was my friend, my shoulder to cry on and and I am blessed to have him in my life. He walked me through some of the worst times and the best times of my life: puberty, my first love, my first drinking episode, my first heartbreak and he was there when I found out I was pregnant. When my real Dad died, my Step Dad was the one who sat next to me at his funeral, who held me when I cried for my Dad, that is what a Father does hey? So this is a tribute to the parents who are there for the children when their biological parents aren’t around.
My husband was a brilliant Dad, my daughters had the perfect role model in a beautiful, kind, loving man who gave freely of his time and patience. He helped with homework and took them to the beach at every opportunity, one could say he spoiled them a bit, I say he loved them and was the perfect father. I am bloody sure he’ll be spending Father’s Day watching over his girls with pride at the women they have become.
When my husband died, a dear friend of mine came to the rescue. he is and always will be one of my best friends. My daughter needed an asthma pump when she was in Cape Town and he traveled for over an hour to get one to her. He looks after all the children in his life with love, care and occasionally to the detriment of his personal life.
Father’s aren’t simply sperm donors, they are the men who are there for children when they are needed, whatever age the child may be. Mr Oh So Right is there for my brood and his own and quite frankly that makes me want him even more, and that M’Dears is quite an achievement 😉
Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads and the men who have stepped up to the plate when needed we love and respect you for everything you do x
